Nana Addo pays respect to Major Mahama at site where he was killed

The president told residents of the town that those behind the heinous act will not be spared.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday paid his respects at the site of Major Maxwell Mahama’s death when he visited Denkyira Obuasi as part of a tour of the Western Region.

Maxwell Adam Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, was lynched on Monday, May 29, 2017, by residents of Denkyira Obuasi on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

A total of 60 suspects arrested in connection with the murder has since made an appearance at the Accra Central District Court.

The town of Denkyira-Obuasi has since received condemnation from several people.

But the president said in spite of the unfortunate incident, the government had not left them out of development initiatives as life must still go on.

He was, however, not pleased with the fact that the killing of the army officer happened during his presidency.

“Ghana is a peaceful country and we should not do things that would bring the name of Ghana into disrepute. We are not like some other countries where after elections, we hear all sorts of bad news. So this should be the last time that such an incident should happen in this country,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Meanwhile, the town had changed its name to New Obuasi and must be called as such henceforth, the acting paramount chief of Denkyira, Nana Agyei Nkyere II announced during the visit.
