Man arrested with weapon in Prez Mahama's church

An armed man was arrested at President Mahama's church with a fully loaded pistol

A 36-year-old man is in the custody of the National Security Secretariat for carrying a weapon at President John Mahama’s church.

He was arrested by the security upon his suspicious moves.

It is unclear why the man believed had gone to the Ringway Assemblies of God church where the president and his wife fellowship with the gun. Unconfirmed reports say the gun is unregistered.

He was caught by a lady church member whilst reaching his pocket for the pistol.

Church members said the man wasn't a member of the church and nobody could identify him.

The Director General of the public affairs department of the Ghana police service, DCOP Rev. David Ampah Benin who is also a church elder of the congregation was spotted at the scene with some police officers to ensure adequate security.

Although President John Mahama was not in church at the time of the incident, his official driver had brought his children to church that morning.

Other key public figures including Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, other senior police officers worship at the Ringway Gospel Assemblies of God Church.

The National Security Secretariat is investigating the issue, a statement from the Communications Ministry said.

“The man was arrested after his fidgety and suspicious behaviour was noticed during the morning service. He was escorted out by security personnel and following a search, the weapon was found.

“President John Dramani Mahama and the First Family are members of the Church but were absent when the incident occurred,” the statement signed by Dr Edward Omane Boamah said.
