Government Reclaims 14.5M Ghana Cedis Corruption Money

According to a report by the Government of Ghana, it has successfully retrieved 14.5M Ghana Cedis from GYEEDA. This is a part of money illegally paid to contractors of the agency.

Dominic Ayine, the country's deputy Attorney General, made this know at the onset of a conference on Ghana's National Anti-Corruption Plan. The plan which was initiated by Prez Mahama under late John Atta Mills in 2009, is a 10-year roadmap to fighting corruption.

It is also aimed at deepening Ghana's democratic dispensation.

The National Anti Corruption Action Plan was initiated in 2009 by President John Mahama, then the Vice President.

In 2013 President Mahama ordered the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to reclaim payments illegally made to individuals and companies through dubious agreements with GYEEDA, the Savanna Accelerated Development Agency (SADA) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

He also tasked the Minister for Youth and Sports to retract with immediate effect, all payments under all GYEEDA contracts, except the payment of arrears to workers up to the end of the year.

Former National Coordinator of GYEEDA -- now National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) -- Abuga Pele and Managing Director of Goodwill Consultancy Firm (a contractor), Philip Akpene Assibit have been charged by government for misappropriation of funds at the agency.
