Effia Nkwanta surgery room collapse; no casualty recorded

A portion of the ceiling collapsed when doctors were in the process of operating on a patient

 

Management of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region has said no casualty was recorded when the ceiling of one of their theatres caved in during surgery on Friday.

FKK Boakye, the administrator of the hospital  confirmed to Pulse.com.gh that, one of the doctors at the Ground Theatre at the facility called to informed him around 9am on Friday that, a portion of the surgery room where they were operating on people had caved in.

He said contrary to reports that the patient on the table at the time of the collapse lost her life, the said patient was transferred to a different theatre and is currently alive and well.

Boakye however admitted that, the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital which is serving a total population of 2.63 million persons in the region as the only referral center is an old facility that needs urgent and thorough  renovation.

He lamented that offices and bungalows of staff  leak.

He also said ceilings caving in in no news as it has happened on several ocassions.

It will be recalled that the Male Ward C of the facility also caught fire in October 2014. The facility until recently had been battling to restore its broken elevators.

He said the only solution will be to construct a new facility.
