“The recent killing of front line officers in the line of duty goes to confirm the increasing hazardous nature of the police profession…however, it is the dream of the current police administration to establish a police fund.”

“This will give hope to personnel especially those in the front line and also reassure all that their welfare is of paramount importance to the administration,” IGP Apeatu said.

Referencing the late American President, John F, Kennedy, IGP Apeatu said: “I do not want us to ask what we can get from the Ghana Police Service, but what can we give to make the service a better institution.”

“At least, we can reduce the initial pain and frustration that the bereaved families go through in such circumstances with a cushioning insurance cover,” he added.

The IGP’s announcement comes after a Lance Corporal was shot dead by his colleagues after they mistook him for an armed robber in May 2017.

In June 2017, another police officer was killed at Tulaku near Michel Camp in the Tema area.

The officer, Michael Kporye, was on night-time patrol duties in the area when two unknown armed assailants shot and killed him.
