The United Nation (UN) said, the idea behind this year's theme, "is to consider how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, building momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal number 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; and number 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning".

Only 50 per cent of working age women are represented in the labour force globally, compared to 76 per cent of men. What’s more, an overwhelming majority of women are in the informal economy, subsidizing care and domestic work.

In a Facebook post, the former president  said, "Let's dedicate today to reflect on the toils of our mothers, sisters and wives. And let's commit to making the world a better place for all girls and women."

The day is being celebrated in Ghana under the theme "Be Bold for Change".
