ECG responsible for factory shutdown - Trade Minister

“Almost all industries depend on power. So, if you have heard about some difficulties with the Komenda Sugar Factory, it is not about them closing down it is because they have had difficulties in having access to direct power from ECG and have been using some generators and transformers which don’t give them all the power they need.“So, it is not a fault of the factory that they have that problem,” the minister said.

The revamped factory has come under intense public debate following conflicting comments by government officials over the status of the project since news broke that it has been shut down for maintenance.

The minority in parliament questioned the viability of the project, suggesting it was inaugurated in a rush.
They also raised the issue of availability of sugarcane and the quality of the Pra River, which most sugarcane farmers use to irrigate their farms.
The Trade ministry has subsequently in a statement on Tuesday, June 7 denied reports of the shutdown of the factory.
It said the shutdown is rather scheduled for the end of June, 2016.
