Ghana’s laws are silent on homosexuality but persons found to be engaging in such acts are mostly attacked and brutally assaulted.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Ghana face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents.Most African countries also frown on the act and in some countries people suspected to be homosexuals are jailed or killed.

A member of the group seeking the signatures of Ghanaians, Taahiru Osman has said he was attacked because he was dating a man in Ghana adding that he was threatened, beaten and stabbed with a bottle.

"They stabbed me as you can see over here. They stabbed my tummy. After this when I went to the government hospital, I was told to go to the police station to have a report before they could work on me. I couldn’t go to the police.

"I can say we are getting ahead and we are getting a whole lot of signatures. On Sunday, the team received about 1000 signatures," Taahiru Osman said.

The petition has therefore called on Government of Canada to promote and respect the human rights of LGBTs.

Once the group collects these signatures, they will be filing their petition to the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland, as well as the Ghana High Commission in Canada, and Winnipeg’s members of parliament.
