According to eyewitnesses, they heard loud explosions from the military base in the early hours of Wednesday.
The midnight explosions caused residents to flee their homes, as the incident also led to a power outage.
Meanwhile, the fire service arrived in time to quench the fire and to prevent the situation from escalating.
“I stood by my window to witness everything. My husband rushed out to check because initially, we thought it was one our neighbour’s house on fire. So he came back to confirm it was actually the arms depot...” a nursing mother is quoted as saying by Myjoyonline.
Another resident, known as Patient, added: “At a point, it felt like there was an earthquake. I was terrified. I still am. My baby woke up scared as well. I was only inside waiting for my husband’s direction as to what to do next.”
The Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) holds a large consignment of explosives at the Michel Camp Barracks.
Explaining further, a freelance Defence Reporter, Moses Dawutey, said: “Residents in the bordering communities have to evacuate to safer grounds. People were heading towards Aflao, Tema, Afienya and Apollonia.
“The explosion occurred at a laboratory where small arms are kept and the Fire Service managed to prevent it from spreading to where the highly explosive weapons are kept.”
So far, no deaths have been reported as a result of the explosion, but it is unknown if there were casualties.
