Ghana could face more jailbreaks after Kwabenya incident – Security expert warns

Ghana risks facing more jailbreaks due to the vulnerable nature of the country's security strategy, a security expert Dr. Kwesi Aning has cautioned.

According to Dr. Kwesi Aning, Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Ghana’s current security strategy is too vulnerable.

He explained that there is an urgent need for the nation to initiate reforms in the national security policy.

Dr. Aning’s comments come on the back on a recent attack on the Kwabenya District Police Headquarters by some armed robbers.

A six-man gang invaded the police station and murdered the policeman on duty, before freeing seven other suspects who were at the time being held in the cells.

The jailbreak has sparked concern among many Ghanaians, who believe the country is not safe with the assailants yet to be captured by the Police.

And Dr. Aning believes many more of such cases could be recorded in the future if no drastic measures are taken now.

“Over time those armed groups have become emboldened that taking up arms against the men in uniform is legitimate,” the security expert said on Joy News’ Top Story.

According to him, the country must quickly adopt more efficient ways of dealing with criminals in order to ensure that the “tables are turned”.

“This is the time to say how do we get a wider stakeholder forum to get a national security policy that is fit and to be able to respond so that we can all become safe and secured,” he added.

Meanwhile, the deputy Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, has assured that the Police is working round the clock to bring the perpetrators of the Kwabenya jailbreak to book.

He further confirmed that government is preparing an insurance package for officers who die in line of duty.
