HIV/AIDS, stroke the leading causes of death in Koforidua

Over 300 persons in Koforidua died as a result of either HIV/AIDS or stroke.

According to data gathered by the Eastern Regional Hospital, over 300 persons died as a result of either HIV or stroke in 2017.

The deaths represent an increase from numbers recoded in 2016 – a situation that has alarmed medical doctors at the facility.

Speaking during an open day celebration aimed at allowing the public interact with health officers, Medical Director at the Regional Hospital, Dr. Kwame Anim Boamah, said the rise in deaths can be attributed to the failure of patients to take their medications serious.

He explained that some patients are also ignorant of the severity of their conditions, hence they do not take the necessary steps to get immediate help.

Pneumonia ranks as the third cause of deaths in Koforidua, with the disease being responsible for 73 deaths.

Other diseases listed as prominent causes of deaths in the area include; birth asphyxia, Septicemia, kidney issues and Hypertension.

Also, malaria leads the way when it comes to admissions at the Eastern Regional Hospital with 1,523 cases recorded.

Anaemia follows with 1053, Hypertension with 981, Sepsis/Septicaemia with 804, Pneumonia with 963 and Hernia with 598 cases.

Gastritis, 478 admissions, diabetes mellitus, 460, Stroke, 452, and cases of Liver disease, 451, completed the top ten most recorded cases at the facility.
