The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has installed solar power systems to withdraw itself from hydro supply.

At a media briefing to assess his performance after one year in office, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr Joseph Akpaloo said the first phase of the project, which is near completion at the Eye Centre, is being undertaken jointly by a US-based non-governmental organisation, Himalayan Cataract Project, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

He said apart from the the provision of the solar system, other projects being undertaken include the re-tooling of the hospital’s Dialysis Centre with the supply and installation of five dialysis machines in conjunction with D. Med Healthcare of Germany.

Dr. Akpaloo said several of the projects being undertaken are aimed at making the hospital the most preferred referral centre in the country.

He further noted that the hospital has instructed a different construction firm to present a budget for the completion of a 40-year-old Maternity and Children’s Block, which had been stalled due to lack of funds.

Dr. Akpaloo, however, called for further assistance towards the replacement of some equipment at the hospital which have become obsolete and over-used.
