Minister wants expensive bride price reviewed

Rev Chris Baah Nartey said the expensive bride price must be reduced in order to allow for the young men who are willing to marry do so with the little resource they have.

This is an assertion by the resident Minister of the Bethel Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Kpong.

Rev Chris Baah Nartey said it is the high bride price that has left most men single.

He was speaking at a marriage summit organised at the Yilo Krobo Heritage Council at Somanya in the Eastern Region.

He said the bride price must be reduced in order to allow for the young men who are willing to marry do so with the little resources they have.

“Most young men are ready to marry but this resolve is always thwarted by expensive bride prices which discourages them from going ahead to marry.”

“Most of these families have it in mind that when their daughter marries, they will not come back to their families and so would charge expensive bride prices. Reduce the bride prices and items required for your sons and daughters to marry,” he added.

Rev Nartey added that he was not oblivious of what tradition demands during a marriage ceremony. He said those things could be demanded without making it financially difficult for potential couples to marry.

He called on all stakeholders to help reduce the current financial cost of marriage.

He said this will ensure the newlyweds after marriage are financially stable to face the future together.
