Outdooring the ID card at a ceremony in Accra, the president commended the National Identification Authority for the speedy implementation of the project which the previous government failed to do in eight years.

“My presence at today’s event, together with the Vice President of the Republic, highlights the seriousness which my government attaches to the national identification system. The NPP government under my leadership has not only prioritised the NIA, but also demonstrated commitment to making the NIA work again. That is why I press to provide the NIA the requisite support to perform its functions effectively,” he said.

Nana Akufo-Addo added that the new card would end all need for biometric identification and registration by other public and private companies, churches and institutions.

"Ultimately, the Ghana ID cards will replace the sectoral identity cards in circulation and shall be the only card to be used in transactions where identification is required by law," he said.

"Assigning the collection and custody of biometric traits to a single institution is safer and in line with current trends", he added.

The registration of Ghanaians for the new ID card will begin with personnel from security agencies, schools banks and all who reside in the Greater Accra Region.

The Central, Western and Brong Ahafo Regions will follow suit before the rest of the regions are brought on board.

The Executive Director of the Authority, Professor Ken Agyemang Attefuah at a press briefing said they are ready to provide Ghanaians with the card within the shortest time.

Ghanaians living abroad can also acquire the card at a price.
