The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked trainee nurses to reject the Gh¢150 allowance being promised to them by the government.

Dr Nsiah Asare, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), who is a leading member of the NPP, said President John Mahama’s decision to restore the payment of allowances to nursing trainees is a desperate move to secure votes for the general elections.

A technical committee set up by the government to look into the cancellation of nursing trainees allowance recommended that the students receive a monthly allowance of GHc 150.

A statement signed by the Health Minister indicated that “the payment amount would serve as a bridging mechanism pending the amendment of the Students Loan Trust Act, to enable students in non-tertiary Health Training Institutions access loans to support their education.”

But Dr Nsiah Asare has described the allowance promise as a lie. He believes government must produce the source of funding for the GH¢150 monthly allowance fee for trainee nurses.

“This GH¢150 promise even though it is too small, I bet you, it is not realistic because there is no money to pay the trainee nurses. This GH¢150 promise was not captured in the budget.

“I, therefore, dare President Mahama to boldly come out and tell Ghanaians about the source and funding of this GH¢150 monthly allowance for the trainee nurses. It is meant to win votes from the nurses,” he said.

Dr Asare was addressing hundreds of NPP supporters during the campaign launch of the Offinso South Constituency NPP on Sunday.

The former KATH CEO charged nurses in the country, particularly those in the training schools, to reject the NDC during the upcoming December polls because they do not have any plans to improve the lives of nurses.
