Pneumococcal Meningitis Six confirmed dead in Ashanti Region

Six people have been confirmed dead in the Ashanti Region following the spread of Pneumococcal Meningitis in the area.

Dr Fredrick Adomako Boateng, Ashanti Regional Deputy Health Director in-charge of Clinical who made this known at a press briefing said the deaths recorded are among 17 suspected cases taken for testing.

He said three of them were recorded in Ofinso Municipal, with another three being recorded in Adansi-north and Ahafo-Ano South

Two of them, he said, were coming from Ejisu Juabeng, adding that all the cases are isolated ones.

"Six of the deaths really came from bacterial meningitis...For the age, we had one less than one year, but he also made it. Two - one being 13 and the other being 15; they were females, but most of them were more than 20 years," Dr Fredrick Adomako Boateng added.

In an interview with Pulse.com.gh, the Regional Health Director, Dr. Alexis Nanbeifuba said the disease "is a reflection of the seasonality of that disease. During the dry season, that is what we expect...There is nothing spectacular about it. We just have to keep an eye on it."

The outbreak of the disease which began in December 2015 in the Tain District of the Brong Ahafo Region has claimed several lives.

The disease later spread to Wenchi, Techiman, Bruohan, Kintampo, and Sene districts all in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Bole in the Northern Region has also recorded some cases, with seven suspected cases being recorded in the Volta Region.
