Striking nurses at the Accra Psychiatric hospital have said they are not perturbed by threats of salary freeze by government.

Government has threatened not to pay salaries of striking psychiatric nurses in the month of October if they fail to work for that period.

Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu said this on the back of an indefinite strike being embarked on by nurses at the hospital.

But speaking to Pulse.com.gh, one of the leaders of the striking nurses, Febiri Emmanuel said they will go ahead with their strike action in spite of the threat.

"It is rather unfortunate that the honourable minister will make such a statement that he is going to freeze our salaries. The question that we are asking is: Is it legal for someone to work for more than 8 to 10 months without the person being paid?"

"But we are not perturbed by the statement. We will continue with our indefinite strike. If they don't pay us, we are not going to work", he added.

Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have began an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries. The strike follows what the nurses describe as deceit and failure on the part of government to fulfill promises to pay them.

The nurses declared a sit down strike on August 3 to demand that their employers pay them all their salaries which had been in arrears for 10 months. The Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu moved in to assure the nurses that their salaries will be paid in two months.
