Salary arrears 3000 nurses, midwives in Ghana to strike

According to the Coalition of unpaid Nurses and Midwives, they will “occupy the Finance and Health Ministries” in the coming days to register their protest

About 3000 nurses and midwives in Ghana have served notice to lay down their tools in September if government does not settle their salary arrears.

According to the Coalition of unpaid Nurses and Midwives, they will “occupy the Finance and Health Ministries” in the coming days to register their protest.

Doctors in Ghana are already striking over their conditions of service. They have threatened to abandon emergency cases from August 13.

Speaking to Starrfmonline, the coordinator of the Coalition, Douglas Adu Poku, said most of their members have not been paid for close to a year now.

“We have done all that is required to get our case solved, but it appears no one is ready to listen to us, so if by September nobody has addressed our issue, we’ll abandon the wards,” Poku said.

Their strike notice comes in the wake of a similar one by nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital and public sector pharmacists.
