Mr. Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defense on Thursday entreated the general public and other law enforcement agencies to cooperate with the Military to promote peace, law and order in the country.

He observed that there were a lot of illegalities such as smuggling, illegal chain saw operations and mining going on in the country, which the military alone could not prevent, unless with the cooperation of all Ghanaians.

Mr. Nitiwul made the call at a durbar with officers and personnel of the Ghana Army at the Third Garrison in Sunyani, as part of his one-day working visit to the Garrison to know the prevailing challenges and also the security situation in the region.

He expressed satisfaction that the operations of the Military in the fight against ‘galamsey’ (illegal mining) had been very successful and would significantly save the nations environment from further degradation.

Mr. Nitiwul commended the Military for their role and comportment in the government’s effort to prevent and prohibit ‘galamsey’ operations without any negative incidence and urged them to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure that the country’s boarders are totally safe and secured against activities that could disturb national peace.

“You are to be very watchful, especially at the countries boarders, to ensure that the peace of the nation is maintained”, he emphasised.

Mr. Nitiwul stated that all the required resources needed by the Garrison would be provided by the government in the shortest possible time to promote effective and efficient performance to help in addressing all security concerns in the region and the entire country.

He said there are plans to renovate the various Military barracks to ensure a decent environment and accommodation for personnel to motivate them, adding that, each barracks would also receive five 50-seater air-conditioned buses to facilitate their movements and operations.

Mr. Nitiwul entreated the personnel to remain loyal and disciplined, and also exhibit professionalism to maintain the integrity and dignity of the Military.

He appealed to the media to be circumspect in their reportage about the Military in the area of politics.

The Defence Minister, before the durbar, went round the Garrison to inspect a sewage treatment plant, a stand-by power generator, a swimming pool, condemned officers quarters and a foundation block of a Day-Care Centre under construction.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Nitiwul and his entourage paid separate courtesy calls on Mr. Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister and the members of the Sunyani Traditional Council.
