This community has access to medical care only twice a month

The only Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound in the community does not have health personnel to attend to the sick.

This is because according to Accra-based 3FM, the only Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound can only be accessed two times in a month.

The CHPS compound which was established about 5 years ago was left unattended until recently when health workers from a nearby community, Assin Kumasi (about 3 miles away), began visiting the facility twice in a month to attend to patients.

A health worker, Eric Baah stationed at Assin Kumasi, confirmed that they report to the facility once in a while to attend to patients and provide them with the necessary drugs.

Baah said the community is informed through announcements on the community radio before their arrival.

The announcement gets people prepared, especially those who need antenatal and prenatal services. He said that they refer critically ill patients to the district hospital in Fante Nyankumasi.

According to a resident of the area Kweku Awortwe when there is an emergency they use a bush path to the nearest community where there is health centre with personnel. He said that this is sometimes dangerous because they encounter wild animals.

He confirmed that “the health workers come here once in a while to attend to sick people and some postnatal services so that makes it twice in a month. It is always announced for us to get prepared.”

“During emergencies, we have to use the bush road to the other communities which is about two and a half miles from here.”

The residents are therefore calling on the government to post some health personnel to the CHPS compound so they can be attended to when the need arises.
