Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have began an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries. The strike follows what the nurses describe as deceit and failure on the part of government to fulfill promises to pay them.

But, speaking on Accra-based Cti fm, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu indicated that he is rather disappointed in the nurses, as government had made it known to them that the delay in salaries is due to a pure technical difficulty.
”I have sent a word. Should they (striking nurses) fail to work in the month of October, government will not pay them for their October salary. I think that people must respect government and laid-down procedures and processes. W haven't said we won't do it. It has been outstanding for a longer period. I appreciate that but since we have deposited 7,900, I think that is a major development.
Mr. Iddrisu said even though he takes full responsibility of the incident, he would kindly urge them to go back to work, as he believes there is no cause for an alarm.
He further said he is hopeful that the salaries of the striking nurses will be paid in two weeks, as Controller and Accountant General begins the process.
The nurses declared a sit down strike on August 3 to demand that their employers pay them all their salaries which had been in arrears for 10 months. The Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu moved in to assure the nurses that their salaries will be paid in two months.
