The Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has indicated the State is in full control of the country’s security, despite the increasing armed robbery in the country.

In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM, Mr Dery said: “We are containing the situation very effectively.”

Making specific comments on the daylight robbery at the Industrial area, Mr Dery said that if the police were to be having a helicopter they would have gotten an air-cover and effectively trailed the culprits.

“What we do not want people to think is that [because] this happened yesterday, [Tuesday, February 27] it looked like we lost control…we haven’t lost control. You have to manage the situation in such a way that you will get the criminals without collateral damage.”

His comment comes after the daylight robbery at the Royal Motors in Accra on Tuesday (February 27, 2019).

The incident adds to the increasing robberies in Ghana, especially in the Greater Accra region.

So far, close to 40 incidents of robberies have occurred in the country since the beginning of the year.

Despite these staggering numbers, Mr Dery said: “the police haven’t lost control at all.”

Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Commander COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare has assured the general public that they would make criminals uncomfortable even if it takes their lives.

“We would do everything even if it means putting our lives on the line to make these criminals very uncomfortable. If ensuring there is security means we lose our lives as police officers, we’ll allow that to ensure all citizens are safe. We are doing all we can to ensure that the good people of this country have their peace of mind and are safe. As for the robbers, they should watch out. The government has committed 800 million to retool the Police Service and we have no reason not to deliver, we’ll become number one in Africa looking at the government’s commitment.”

He, however, downplayed claims that the Inspector General of Police is failing at protecting Ghanaians.

“The police service is doing so much and the community should support the police administration to achieve more results. It will be very unfair and unfortunate for one to say the IGP is failing. The IGP and his men are working day and night to ensure safety for all. Visibility patrol has increased across the country. We are doing what we have been doing and have added on to ensure the safety of all. Security is a partnership, the security service and the community can help ensure safety in the country.”
