Over 1m Ghanaians are unemployed - Survey

The report, which was introduced by the Ghana Statistical Service on Thursday estimates that the country’s total population is 27,669 million.

Out of that figure, 47.7% are males and 52.3% are females with a dependency ratio of 81.3, the report said.

It further revealed that about 14 million are employed while one million are unemployed.

Three million people are not identified in the labour force, and these are said to be either pregnant women, house wives, pensioners, and so on.

Upper East region (18.4%) recorded the highest unemployment rate while Brong Ahafo (8.4%) recorded the lowest unemployment rate.

The report also disclosed that paid employees are a little over 1.8 million. Females are more likely to be unemployed than their male counterparts, as the total unemployment rate for females is (12.5%) relative to males (11.5%).

The Service sector also emerged as the major employer of about 48 percent.  Agriculture followed with about 32 percent.

The 2015 Labour Force Survey (LFS) is the first stand-alone survey on labour with its main purpose being to collect basic statistics on Ghana's human resource.

This will enable the public and private sectors and other relevant institutions have the requisite data to enable them make informed decisions on the labour force and other labour-related issues in the country.
