26-yr-old UNIBEN graduate kills self after lover gets engaged

A NYSC member took his own life after discovering that his 'lover' is engaged to another man. He drank a poisonous substance.

A 26-year-old graduate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has committed suicide after a finding out that a girl he is in love with has been engaged by another man.

The deceased, identified as Ernest, was until his death a member of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), serving at Redemption Secondary School, Ofombogha 1, Obubra LGA of Cross Rivers State.

Student Pulse gathered that Ernest and the girl, Chioma Okewuru, both serve at the same school.

He drank a poisonous substance after Chioma returned from a trip with an engagement ring, supposedly given to her by the man she intends to marry.

The Acting Divisional Police Officer for Obubra, Mr. Noah Ntuen, told Vanguard that Chioma had previously rejected Ernest's love advances and told him she could only be his friend.

“The girl had told the guy that she would not marry him, but that they could be friends," Ntuen said.

"So when she came back from home last weekend and showed him the ring her husband-to-be gave her, the young man became furious.

"On Wednesday, the situation became worse and at about 7pm, he locked himself in the room and took some poisonous substances."

Ntuen added that the Police are carrying out investigations.

A unnamed source quoted in the Vanguard report said the romance between the two corp members began when they met during their orientation camp last year.

“They met at the NYSC Orientation Camp at Abrekpe-Ebokpo and as luck would have it, they were both posted to the same school where they had a relationship going," the source said.

“He had the hope the whole thing would end in marriage, but Chioma already had another person she wants to marry.”

The deceased's body has been deposited at Obubra General Hospital.
