CPP Greenstreet paid huge sums to become flagbearer - Samia

Speaking to the media after the elections held at the Trade Fair Center in La, Accra, the defeated aspirant admitted that she is unhappy with the results because Mr. Greenstreet did not win on merit.

Defeated flagbearer aspirant of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Samia Nkrumah has accused newly elected flagbearer, Ivor Greenstreet of vote buying.

Mr. Greenstreet won the flagbearership race by a landslide by polling over 60% of the total votes cast.

Ms Nkrumah who was confident of winning the primaries only secured 28.9% of the votes.

Speaking to the media after the elections held at the Trade Fair Center in La, Accra, the defeated aspirant admitted that she is unhappy with the results because Mr. Greenstreet did not win on merit.

“No; I’m obviously not happy with the results, but I accept them. The fact of the matter is that every delegate was paid GHc200 and GHc500 actually, amongst many other things. So, it was down to money and of course we cannot be happy about that but we accept the results, and we move on,” she said.

“There is a lot of work to be done and I will always serve the party. It’s a vision to serve not for an individual,” she added.

Ms Nkrumah who is the immediate past chairperson of the party said she will however, not contest the results.

“I don’t seek injunctions. There’ll always be another day. Unfortunately this is a reflection of what happens in our politics and these are some the things we have to battle against.”

In a later interview with Accra-based Joy FM the monies were distributed on the last day “and in huge amounts.”

She said the cash sums ranged from GHC 200 to GHC 1,000 “and in a situation where we are practicing democracy and there is poverty, people do succumb to this kind of temptation.”

“There is no doubt about it that big money was a major factor,” she stressed, adding that although she has no proof of her allegations, “it was common knowledge and everybody was talking about it.”
