Gov't should talk less about GDP, inflation - David Percy

Dr. David Percy was of the view that the ordinary Ghanaian is unable to directly relate to the constant talk about GDP and inflation rates.

A leading member of the National Reform Party, Dr. David Percy was of the view that the ordinary Ghanaian is unable to directly relate to the constant talk about GDP and inflation rates.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Radio Gold, Dr. Percy expressed the hope that subsequently “we will spend more time not just talking about growth in GDP or inflation rate but to spend a lot more time on looking at how the Ghanaian population is faring in terms of jobs, housing and all the critical areas that affect them.”

According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Human Development Report of 2015, Ghana gained entry in the Medium Human Development category with a score 0.579 which is higher than Nigeria’s 0.514, Kenya’s 0.548, Senegal’s 0.466 and Cote d'Ivoire’s 0.462 who were all co-signed to the Low Human Development category by their respective scores per government sources.

The Communications Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah in a statement attributed the score to the Mahama government’s huge investment in social welfare programmes and social infrastructure and people-centered policies and interventions since 2009.

But Dr. Percy believes that such news always comes as a surprise to Ghanaians because on many occasions “it appears that our government is working in the dark, almost like performing magic.”

“If things are good, it is presented as something magical. If things are bad, people try to window dress so that it doesn’t come out too badly,” he added.

He continued saying, “government is the manager of expectations and often when things come to us out of the blue, it becomes difficult to address.”
