Abu Ramadan resolves to deal with 'mischievous' register after the polls
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei has said that some of the names of persons who used the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards as a proof of Ghanaian citizenship might still be on the register.

This is in spite of the Supreme Court order that such names should be deleted as such registrants are illegal.
This comes few weeks after the EC announced that it had deleted the names of 56,000 registrants who used the NHIA cards for registration.

“It’s possible because of the human part [involved in the process]… So it was a manual process…That is why the Supreme Court said that delete all those you have submitted including those you will find,” she said on Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV.
In a response, Abu Ramadan said: “I think we should let sleeping dogs lie and let’s finish the election and see what sort of reform proposals the Commission will bring after the general elections.”
“We would see whether there would be a proper remedy to cure the mischief in the register before the 2020 general election. We will look at that when we have four more years,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.
The Supreme Court on July 5, 2016, directed the Electoral Commission to with immediate effect remove the names of the 56,000 people it presented as persons who registered with NHIA cards as proof of Ghanaian citizenship.
The order followed the case in which former National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention, Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako challenged the credibility of the electoral roll for the general elections.

Following the deletion, the EC gave the opportunity for the NHIS registrants to re-register. The re-registration exercise is expected to end on Friday, August 12, 2016.
