The Minister was speaking at the national police command conference in Accra. He explained that the activities of these vigilante groups threaten the peace and stability of the country especially during elections.

“You must respond to security challenges in a way that will enhance our national image. Of the greatest importance is the need to keep an eye on the so called private security forces that are increasingly being linked to political parties. You must ensure the immediate disbanding of each and every one of them”

He called on all political parties to trust the police for all their security needs rather than encourage the formation and existence of such “unscrupulous” groups.

“Political parties and their leaders are expected to rely on the only legitimate and approved security organization in the country to provide security at all times and this organization is the Ghana Police Service. We cannot afford to leave the safety and security of this country and its people in the hands of faceless individuals and groups who in the end mite become the very weapons used to derail what has been so gloriously achieved” he added

In times past politically motivated vigilante groups such as Kandahar boys, Bolga Bulldogs and Azorka boys have been involved in violent clashes which have left some wounded and others dead. This has led to members of the general public criticizing their actions and calling for a ban on such groups.

Meanwhile, specially trained police officers who will protect presidential candidates ahead of the Novemeber elections have been commissioned today. The IGP John Kudalor said the personnel have been trained to handle any form of security threats on the candidates they will be assigned to.

“All political parties are determined to win this election. A detail auditing of the entire country has been done to identify all the flashpoints and vulnerable areas. Plans are far advanced to assign security details to all the presidential candidates and their running mates, I’m glad to announce that they are passing out today” Mr. Kudalor said.
