Tension in Weija-Gbawe over NPP’s ambulance donation

Political watchers believe the move by Mrs. Abrah – a one-term MP – is aimed at reconciling with Mrs. Mensah following a frosty relationship between them after the primaries.

Plans by the incumbent Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe constituency Rosemond Abrah to donate an ambulance to the Ga South Municipal Hospital (Akawe) has hit a snag.

Hospital officials, according to sources, have kicked against the move because the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary aspirant for the constituency Obuobia Darko-Opoku had already donated an ambulance to the only hospital serving the three constituencies of the municipality.

Obuobia donated the ambulance, which is currently being used at the hospital, on August 22, 2016 to mark her 39th birthday.

According to hospital officials, Mrs. Abrah had been advised to channel her resources into “other pressing needs of the hospital” but she is adamant.

“I’m going ahead to present the ambulance on Monday at 10am,” Mrs. Abrah said.

According to sources the hospital authorities are also refusing to accept the ambulance is due to the fact that the ambulance is likely to be branded with pictures of the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate Tina Mensah who defeated the incumbent Mrs. Abrah.

“The money being used to buy the ambulance is coming from the MP’s Common Fund which is State money so it is wrong for her to brand it with her candidate’s pictures. We are not doing politics here,” a senior hospital official said on condition of anonymity.

Mrs. Abrah declined comment on the branding, but admitted the money being used to purchase the ambulance is coming from her Common Fund.

Hospital officials are also against the fact that the vehicle purchasing process did not go through tendering since it was State funds which was used to procure it.

“There is an issue concerning the donation but it will be resolved. It was the hospital which gave me a requisition and I’m only fulfilling it,” Mrs. Abrah said.

The development is brewing tension between the opposition New Patriotic Party and the Akawe hospital officials.

The Municipal Director of Health of the Ga South Municipal Hospital Dr Bright Davies-Teye refused to comment on the situation.
