Free SHS could worsen unemployment situation – Amissah-Arthur warns

Amissah-Arthur has warned that President Akufo-Addo may face difficulties in providing jobs for beneficiaries of the Free SHS programme when they graduate.

According to him, government should prepare to create jobs for the SHS students when they graduate or risk seeing them add to the growing list of unemployed youth in the country.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaigned extensively on the Free SHS policy during the 2016 election, promising to exonerate senior high school students from fees if voted into power.

Indeed, the Nana Addo led government fulfilled that promise when the programme was successfully rolled out last September.

Over 90,000 students reportedly benefitted from the Free SHS policy, with many more expected to join in the next academic year.

However, Mr. Amissah-Arthur believes government may have dug a hole for itself by birthing the programme.

According to him, although the initiative is laudable, it could end up worsening the unemployment situation in the country if government fails to provide jobs for students when they finally graduate.

“Now let’s plan properly before they graduate and so we know what to do,” Mr. Amissah-Arthur remarked, further asking, “what possibilities are there for them to get jobs and so on?”

“We have a free SHS that has not changed the curriculum, the president talks about curriculum, you develop the curriculum before you put the students in there, so a lot of students are going to school doing the same thing that they did 10, five years ago.

“And we are expecting better results from them,” he said, adding “It’s not good enough for us,“ the former Vice President added.

During President Akufo-Addo’s second State of the Nation Address (SONA) last Thursday, he admitted that growing unemployment rate in the country is alarming, but promised to fix it.

However, Mr. Amissah-Arthur believes the country could be in for a difficult time if the government does not sit up.
