I’m hopeful of making my first prosecution this year – Martin Amidu

Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu

According to him, most of the cases his office is currently investigating are near completion and the persons involved will soon be processed before court.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor was established in November 2017 with a specific mandate to oversee cases of corruption, involving public officers and individuals in the private sector.

Many Ghanaians were upbeat following the appointment of Mr. Amidu as the country’s first-ever Special Prosecutor, however the “Citizen Vigilante” has so far failed to make an effective impact at his new role.

This has led to criticisms from some quarters, with former president Jerry John Rawlings wondering “what is holding him up”.

But although he did not give an exact date for his first prosecution, Mr. Amidu is hopeful that he will prosecute his first case this year.

The Special Prosecutor was, however, quick to add that he will only drag persons to court once his office finds ample evidence against them.

“It is difficult for me to say you are going to see the first prosecution tomorrow or tomorrow next. As we sit now, I am yet to have engaged prosecutors, I have a few investigators, I am trying to get a few prosecutors who will handle whatever dockets are completed,” Mr. Amidu told Accra-based Citi FM.

“When I am certain that a citizen has to lose his right by being put before a court to answer for an offense, he will hear it. I don’t think it is proper for me to announce that somebody has been arrested and he is being investigated when you don’t even have any evidence as to whether the evidence is true or false.”

He further disclosed that the cases his office is investigating involves persons from both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We are investigating so many other cases, some of them are near completion. They involve very sensitive and important people. We are investigating people from both divides and nobody can stop it,” Mr. Amidu added.
