EC warns prospective voters against app

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to expunge the names of all persons who used the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card as proof of Ghanaian citizenship when they registered for the new voters register in 2012.

The EC presented to court the names of some 56, 900 people who used the card to register. The court also ordered that any further names that would be found should also be deleted and all those affected given an opportunity to re-register.

Earlier last week, the EC announced that it had deleted the names of all NHIS registrants and said that from Monday July 18 through to Thursday July 28 all affected persons can re-registered at any of the EC’s district offices.

Local developers have subsequently come up with online applications to enable Ghanaians check their status on the voter register.

On one of the apps, machecki.com, you are asked to enter your voters ID number or NHIS ID number, after which it verifies to tell you whether your name is in the voters’ register or not.

But Eric Dzakpasu has cautioned against the app, saying the site itself has issued a kind of disclaimer that “Machecki is not commissioned by the Electoral Commission or affiliated to the Commission and that is enough to make people stay away”.

He told Accra-based Onua FM that people who wish to check online must rather send their Voter’s ID number to short code 6363 on Vodafone, Tigo or MTN.

Eric Dzakpasu however said this form of checking one’s eligibility online cannot help rectify any mistakes that might occur.
