National Cathedral a gimmick to win votes from Christians – Ofosu Kwakye

Felix Ofosu Kwakye said the only reason why the government is bent on constructing the National Cathedral is to court votes from Christians by appealing to their emotions.

According to him, the government will be better off using the funds to improve the country’s infrastructural deficit.

Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said capacity should not be a problem because there are many churches in the country that boast large auditoriums for programmes.

He, therefore, opined that the only reason why the government is bent on constructing the National Cathedral is to court votes from Christians by appealing to their emotions.

“With the greatest respect to the President, I don’t think a Cathedral is the most important thing in our lives at this time. We have many churches in the country with some of the most fantastic auditoriums. The Church of Pentecost has this huge auditorium somewhere in Kasoa, and that is where we held our Youth and Women’s conference. There is no church service that you cannot hold there, there is also the lighthouse,” he said on Citi TV.

“At the heart of all this, is an attempt by the President of the country to appeal to the religious fundamentalists as a way of getting votes at the elections so that people are not thinking rationally about the matter, but rather they make emotional and fundamentalist arguments. What is it that this country stands to benefit from the National Cathedral?” he added.

His comments come following the Finance Minister’s announcement that government will provide see money for the construction of the project.

Reading the 2019 Budget in Parliament, Ken Ofori-Atta disclosed that “the state is facilitating this process by providing the land, the Secretariat, and seed money for the preparatory phase”.

Last year, government revealed plans to construct a National Cathedral to serve as a national non-denominational Christian worship center.

In March this year, President Akufo-Addo went ahead to unveil the design and architecture for the National Cathedral at a brief ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre.

However, government’s decision to put up the Cathedral has been criticised by certain quarters who believe it should not be a priority when other sectors are badly in need of an uplift.

The concerns deepened after it emerged that government will have to demolish buildings including residences of judges to make way for the construction of the Cathedral.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has defended his government’s decision to construct a National Cathedral, describing the project as a “priority among priorities”.
