Akufo-Addo's cabinet: Who it might be

Several names have been floated for Cabinet positions, with the list dominated by former appointees of the erstwhile Kufour administration.

Nana Akufo-Addo's resounding victory at the polls to emerge as the president-elect means that he has a task of filling out a Cabinet to guide his administration.

Several names have been floated for Cabinet positions, with the list dominated by former appointees of the erstwhile Kufuor administration.

Based on newspaper report close to persons familiar with the thinking of the president-elect, comments of persons familiar with the president-elect, and Nana Akufo-Addo’s own comments, here’s who could find themselves part of an Akufo-Addo Cabinet in 2017.

Attorney General

The leading contender for the Minister of Justice and Attorney General is Gloria Akufo. She served as Deputy Attorney under former president John Kufuor and was a key member of the NPP’s legal team in the 2012 election petition.

Another possibility for Attorney General is Philip Addison. He was the lead council in the election petition.

Finance Minister

Nana Akufo-Addo in recent times has been seen in public with Ken Ofori Atta, co-founder of Data Bank. He was on trip with the president-elect when he paid a courtesy call on Nigeiran President Mohammadu Buhari.

In addition, he served as the head of the party’s campaign finance committee that supervise the mobilization of revenue for the party’s election campaign.

Dr Anthony Osei Akoto has also been linked to the position. He previously served as Minister of State at the Finance Ministry and later as the substantive minister.

Defense Minister

The leading contender is Dominic Nitiwul, the Member of Parliament from Bimbila. He was one of the first MPs to break the party’s rules to publicly endorse Nana Akufo-Addo’s third time bid at the NPP’s primaries.

Another pick could be Albert Kan-Dapaah. He ever served as Defense Minister in the NPP’s last administration.

Energy Minister

Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko is the party’s policy adviser and has vast knowledge in this field. Most of his press conference has been on the party’s position on Ghana’s oil and gas sector.

Another pick could be K.T. Hammond. He is the longest serving deputy minister in the Energy ministry. He is a lawyer by profession and served as the Minority’s spokesman on Energy. He is the Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa.

Health Minister

MP for Dormaa Central, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has emerged as likely to be appointed the Minister for Health.

Another pick for this position could be Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Manhyia North MP. He is a Medical Doctor by profession.

Trade and Industry.

The president-elect has publicly named Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen as his Trade Minister.

Minister of Information

Mustapha Hamid, the president-elect’s spokesman, appears to be in a comfortable position of becoming the Information Minister.

Local Government Minister

MP for Okere and former General Secretary of the NPP, Dan Botwe, is likely to be appointed the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.

Environment, Science and Technology

Hajia Alima Mahama is likely to be named as the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

Otiko Djabah likely to be made the Minister of Gender.

Sports Minister

One of the four persons below is highly tipped to be appointed as the first Sports Minister.

Isaac Asiamah - MP for Atwima Mponua in the Ashanti Region is a ranking member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports and has been outspoken on sports related issues in Ghana.

Osei Bonsu Amoah - The legal brain was the deputy sports minister in 2006 when the Black Stars booked a place in their maiden FIFA World Cup in Germany.

Vincent Sowah Odotei- The MP elect for Dade Kotopon constituency will be ideal for the position the sports minister under the NPP administration which starts on January 7, 2017.

Freda Prempeh - The MP for Tano North is the only female on the Parliamentary Select Committee on sports. Like Akua Sena Dansua who was the first woman to serve as Youth and Sports, Freda Prempeh can pull up surprise by becoming the first Youth and Sports Minister under the Nana Addo led government.
