More ‘dumsor’ In 2015 – VRA Cautions

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has served notice to Ghanaians that there will be more power cuts in 2015.

The VRA’s Planning and Business Development Officer, Mr. Kofi Ellis, has disclosed to the public that the current load shedding routine is far from over. According to VRA, the Akosombo Dam which is the nation’s major power production planet is running below capacity.

This was revealed at a stakeholder meeting with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) on Wednesday, December 10.The meeting which was convened by the AGI was to get the stakeholders in Ghana’s energy sector to brief industry players on the status of the ongoing power crisis.

Mr. Ellis revealed to the Daily Graphic that “2015 is going to be a relatively difficult year.” He explained that aside the challenges with the Akosombo dam, another major contributing factor which will affect power supply in 2015 is the current GH¢1 billion debt of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to power producers. “We owe every single bank in the country because we do not get the money we need to buy the crude that we need for production,” Mr. Ellis remarked.

Although the government together with stakeholders in the power sector have been working to resolve the energy crisis which has been ongoing for the past two years, the VRA says the crisis is far from over.
