Cabinet has ordered public utility providers Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to exempt all health posts and schools from their disconnection exercises.

The directive follows threats by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to go on a demonstration against an earlier intention by the Ministry to compel students to pay additional levies for utilities.

Government says the exemption of all educational and health institutions from the disconnection exercise is in view of critical services they provide to the citizenry. This was contained in a statement issued by deputy minister in charge of pre-tertiary education, Alex Kyeremeh.
