Angry pre-paid users to demonstrate over 'abnormal' tariffs

Some Ghanaians have complained about how their prepaid credits run faster ever since the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced the 59.2% increase in electricity tariffs.

A group calling itself the Pre-Paid Demonstrators Group has warned it will demonstrate if government fails to address what they describe as an abnormal running of their prepaid credits.

The Public Relations Officer for the Pre-Paid Demonstrators Groups, Kwabena Berima said the group's analysis has revealed that the public is paying more, about 70 and 80 percent in electricity tariffs.

“Initially ECG said that they had some technical problems therefore all those who had been affected they would do a refund effective January 1-3. Our findings have told us that some of the people have received their refund, but others have not. We went to ECG again and they told us that for now there is no technical problem and that it is the levies on NHIs and others that have increased,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.

“We are calling on the president to also intervene because he gave 59 and we are paying more than that. If by the end of this month nothing has been done about to rectify the situation, we will hit the streets to register our displeasure,” he added.
