Tamale drivers demonstrate over 'Mahama Camboo'

The drivers complain the activities of these tricycles, popularly referred to as 'Mahama Camboo' was affecting their business.

Taxi and trotro drivers in the Tamale Metropolis in the Northern Region on Tuesday embarked on a protest over the influx of tricycles being used as taxis.

Commuters have therefore been left stranded in various locations as drivers have abandoned their vehicles to hit the streets at the development.

The drivers have argued that the use of tricycles as passenger vehicles is illegal.

They have therefore petitioned the office of the Northern Regional Minister,  the Driver, Vehicle and Licensing Authority and the Road Safety Commission to intervene.

The aggrieved drivers noted that they would only go back to work if appropriate authorities involved stepped in.They have further threatened to go to court should the practice continue.

In April 2015, a total of 120 of such tricycles were distributed to young people in the Upper East and Northern regions by MASLOC, a microfinance body.

However, concerns were raised about the safety of such tricycles.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Road Safety Commission early last month condemned the use of the tricycles as taxis within the region, adding that such activities contravene the road traffic regulation, LI 21/80, regulation 128.
