19-Year-old nabbed for offering nephew for rituals

A team of policemen was swiftly dispatched to the shrine to arrest a 19-year-old man and rescued his four-year-old nephew

The suspect, 19-year-old Kyei Baffour

A fetish priest has caused the arrest of a 19-year-old man who allegedly presented his four-year-old nephew to be killed for ritual purposes at Pobiman in Accra.

The suspect, Kyei Baffour, unemployed, is said to have lured his nephew to the fetish priest’s shrine after he had pre-arranged with the priest to offer the boy for sacrifice, instead of two fowls, to enable him to make money.

Though the fetish priest, who does not wish to be named, claimed he had explained to Baffour that the ritual required blood and that it would mean killing the boy, Baffour is said to have been adamant. He wanted to make money at all cost and so decided to go ahead with the rituals.

How Baffour was arrested

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Amasaman District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Elvis Bawa Sadongo, said about 8 p.m. on October 21, 201, the police received a call from the spiritualist that a man had called at his shrine with his nephew to be sacrificed for money.

“A team of policemen was swiftly dispatched to the shrine to arrest the suspect and rescue the boy,” he said.

The boy, whose name has been withheld, was later handed over to his grandmother with whom he stayed. The grandmother claimed that she had gone to church in the evening and left the boy at home.

Mr Sadongo said the fetish priest told the police that Baffour had called him on phone, after seeing his billboard on the Amasaman , that he (Baffour) wanted to be rich, as his friends were getting richer.

Later, he said, Baffour called at the fetish priest’s shrine, claiming that he was desperate and wanted to enquire what would be needed for the ritual.

At the shrine, Baffour is said to have paid GH¢30, instead of GH¢50, as consultation fee because he said he did not have money on him.

“When he was asked to bring two fowls for the ritual, he claimed he could not afford the fowls but would bring a human being,” Mr Sadongo said.

“The fetish priest explained the procedure to Baffour and emphasised that the boy would be killed and his blood used for the money ritual in his presence, but the suspect said he could watch the procedure.

The fetish then brought out a knife and had expected Baffour to panic, but he was not moved, and so the fetish excused himself and called the police,” he said.

Police investigations, Mr Sadongo said, later discovered that the boy was a relation of the suspect’s and they both lived in the same house at Ofankor.

He said Baffour had been provisionally charged for child stealing and would be put before court.
