'Dumsor' suspended as power supply meets demand - GRIDCO

This comes on the back of assurances by the Power minister, Dr Kwabena Donkor that load shedding would end by the end of the year.

Ghanaians are to witness a suspension in the current loading following the ability of power producers to generate enough power for the country's demand, the Bulk power distributor Ghana Grid Company, GRIDCO has said.

Addressing the Government Assurance Committee in Parliament on Wednesday, Dr. Donkor said "Yes, indeed I made a promise that load shedding will end by the end of this year. Fortunately for us, we are still not at the end of the year."

His comments follow an earlier promise that he would resign at the end of the year if load shedding persists.

But, Ghanaians are currently experiencing an increase in electricity supply this Christmas, a situation many have attributed to the offline season of industries this yuletide.

Speaking on Multi TV, The Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCO, William Amuna said the power crisis is seriously under control.

"From the 24th of December we have not been shedding load at all. It is possible an area could be off but that may be due to a localised problem.

"We have not been shedding load at all throughout the country. Virtually all the generation plants are operational. We even have one unit which we are not running now in Tema but we still have adequate supply," he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCO was however unable to confirm whether load shedding has ended, adding that "For now generation is matching demand. we hope it stays this way...I wouldn't just come out and say load shedding is over."
