A huge fire in a cosmetics factory outside the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Friday has resulted in the death of 5 people leaving nearly 50 injured, police has said.

The incident occurred following an explosion during working hours at the plant, reportedly a subsidiary of Japanese cosmetics maker Mandom Corp.

Jakarta police chief Tito Karnavian told reporters that, "A total of five people were killed in the fire, while 46 others were injured”.

He added that more than half of the injured suffered burns to more than 70 per cent of their bodies.

A forensics team has been deployed by the police to investigate the cause of the blast, which remains unclear, but have been unable to enter the site due to the heat.
