"My husband used to threaten me"- wife of deceased policeman speaks

Rafa Iddrisu, who is 25 years old, said that Lance Corporal Amuzu used a screwdriver to abuse her in December 2015. Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM Rafa Iddrisu narrated that the 32-year-old police officer had threatened to kill her, their children and himself as well.

“Last year [2016] on 10th December, my husband came back from town accusing me of cheating on him. Before I could explain myself, he had removed a screwdriver in an attempt to pierce me, but I had to save it with my hands. He later threatened to kill the children including himself and me” she narrated.

Iddrisu said she had gone to visit her sister at Ashaiman when the incident happened. Rafa Iddrisu, who had separated with the deceased husband before his death, added that she lodged a complaint with the police after the series of threats.

She said, “I have filed several complaints with the police for redress, but was told that since he was a police officer, he could not be arrested but cautioned.”

She also mentioned that the Domestic Violence and Victims Unit (DOVVSU) ordered the deceased to rent a new apartment for her and the children after she lodged a complaint with the unit.

“After I lodged one of the complaints at the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, (DOVSSU), asked my husband (the deceased) to rent us a new accommodation since we could not live together under the same roof.”

“While we waited for him to rent a new place of abode for us, we have been perching in an uncompleted accommodation around the Devtraco estates.”

Background

Lance Corporal William Amuzu, is reported to have shot himself after killing his mother in-law and two children. The first child is estimated to be about three years old while the second is barely a year old.

It is not clear yet the reason behind the gory incident. The Lance Corporal is reported to have booked an AK 47 rifle for guard duties on Monday (July 25) only for him to go home and commit such an act.

Meanwhile the Tema Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the matter.
