Be careful of panelists you bring on air - Catholic Bishops to producers

“It is becoming increasingly worrying to us that on a daily basis some panellists on radio programmes and callers to these programmes continue to make unguarded comments and contributions, instead of discussing issues that will benefit the development of Ghana," the Catholic Bishops said.

Rev. Bonsu

A statement signed by the Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu said “We are of the view that this alleged threat is a very serious matter that should not be taken lightly. Any attack on the Judiciary, the custodians of law in our country, is an attack on our freedom and security as a nation.”

“It is becoming increasingly worrying to us that on a daily basis some panellists on radio programmes and callers to these programmes continue to make unguarded comments and contributions, instead of discussing issues that will benefit the development of Ghana.

“All these and more in this period of the run-up to the 2016 elections are contributing immensely to the rising political temperature in the country,” the statement from the Catholic Bishops said.

The Catholic Bishops were however grateful to government for indicating its preparedness of its security forces to beef up security for the judges.

Background

The Supreme Court on Tuesday cited owners of Montie fm, the two panelists and the host of the daily political show for contempt.

The judges subsequently issued a warrant for them to appear before them and answer to the charge of contempt.

This was after two political commentators; Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn appeared the radio station and tried to incite people against the Supreme Court judges for their judgment on the Voters’ register.

An audio recording of their comments have since gone viral on social media with the Media Foundation for West Africa condemning their conduct.

The host of the show Mugabe Maase is being accused of allowing the two men to go ahead with their comments uninterrupted.

Management of the station has since apologised to the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court for allowing its airwaves to be used by two radio panelists to threaten the lives of justices of the court.
