Arrest Party-Goers Who Litter The Environment - Nana Dwomoh Sarpong

Environmental Activist, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong is calling on authorities at the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to arrest and prosecute party-goers who litter the environment during the Yuletide.

Nana Dwomoh Sarpong who is also President for Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies, a non-governmental organisation observed that the failure by the authorities to deal with such persons has contributed to the sanitation challenges confronting the nation. Government in a renewed effort to correct the wrongs, has set the first Saturday of every month as National Sanitation Day (NSD) for which citizens are mandated to participate in clean-up exercises within their communities from 6:00 to 9:00 am.

The first two editions were observed simultaneously throughout the country. But in order to make it more effective, the Ministry for Local Government and Rural Development has re- strategized and has taken the exercise to each of the ten regions. This is to provide the opportunity for the Ministry to have at first hand, the peculiar environmental challenges in the regions and deal appropriately with them. But the Environmentalist insists, unless the laws regulating environment activities are strictly enforced and wrongdoers punished, the exercise will be meaningless.

He said many revelers have consistently disregarded the laws by littering their surroundings with filth after organizing get-togethers. “If we don’t change and we continue to treat the environment with carelessness, then the future is not good. “If the laws on sanitation are not enforced…people will soon lose interest in the Sanitation Days,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the next National Sanitation Day will be marked in the Ashanti Region next Saturday, January 3, 2015.
