The boat, according to Gbedeho, was coming from Grube to Yeji carrying 57 passengers when suddenly the boat hit a tree stump.

He told Accra based Neat FM that they did not know there was a tree stump there.

His boat takes about 75 passengers and has about 157 life jackets.

Asked why the passengers were not wearing the life jackets, he noted they [passengers] always refuse to put it on when they are given.

According to him, everyone in Yeji can testify to his claims.

The Ghana Maritime Authority has been blamed for the disaster for failing to enforce safety regulations after it came to light that the passengers had no life jackets on.

The Member of Parliament for Pru East and former Power Minister, Dr. Kwabena Donkor said “the major reason in my opinion is the non-enforcement of appropriate regulations by the regulatory body and the district assemblies along the Volta Lake.”

But the Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Dr Peter Azumah, said Donkor’s comments were “unfortunate.”

"It is unfortunate. With due respect and humility, a responsible person like an honourable MP will make such a statement," he said Joy FM.

"The Authority is just a national agency and this is not a commercial business, therefore there is nothing like cost recovery so we try as much as possible within the monies that we are raising from internally generated resources to do these things," he added.
