Ghanaian defender Abdul Baba Rahman eyes personal improvement and development for his Chelsea side

The former Kumasi Asante Kotoko player featured in his biggest club football game against Paris Saint-Germain in the knock out round of Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League game on Tuesday.

The left full back impressed with his play and has since earned plaudits all round considering his lack of game fitness at the Chelsea club. Manager of the Stamford Bridge outfit Guus Hiddink joined the chorus of praise for the Black Stars defender branding Rahman as a tactically gifted player and good going forward.

Abdul Baba Rahman reflecting on the UEFA Champions League game in an interview with Chelsea’s official club website said:

“I guess it was the biggest game I have played in considering it was a Champions League game and this is my first time of playing in the knockout stages, and also playing up against a tough opponent. It was my biggest occasion.

“I felt like I did not have so much pressure on me because we have a good team and I was surrounded by good players so it was not something too difficult for me.”

Asked if the 21-year-old was showing his full strength as a player in both attacking and defending, a determined Baba Rahman said:

“Well no. Because I try to improve game after game and you want to try bit by bit. I am going to bring out a lot more.”

Chelsea is a dream come true for the Ghana international despite his lack of game time at the London club. Baba in the interview narrated how far he had come considering he used to just find satellite TV locations in an attempt to catch a glimpse of Champions League games.

“When I was young I used to watch it a lot and when the Champions League comes and it is on TV, everybody in Africa, and especially Ghana just runs to all the TVs to watch the games. Lots of people gather together,” Rahman tells his story.

“If you do not have access to a satellite, you cannot watch it on live televisions so you have to go to a place where they show it.

“Lots of people watch the games from England, and I can say it is the English Premier League that is the most dominant because the satellite we had in Ghana showed mostly the Premier League, and I can say as well that many Ghanaians are supporting Chelsea, especially because of Michael Essien.”
