The 4,000-seater edifice was commissioned on Tuesday by President John Mahama and as part of the inauguration activities, a boxing bout was held with the main event being a duel between Sheriff Quaye and Benjamin Lamptey – the duo fought for the vacant national lightweight belt.
The two boxers went into the fight knowing very what was at stake, Lamptey scored a knock down in round six, but Quaye never got frustrated as he fired from angles.
At the end of the close contest, one judge scored it 116-112 for Lamptey but the other two judges had it 113-115 and 113-117 for Quaye.
In the undercard fights, Success Tetteh recorded a majority decision (78-76, 77-77 and 77-77) win over Emmanuel Allotey in their scheduled super bantamweight contest. Felix Ajom (79-70, 77-72 and 79-70) scored a unanimous decision win over Victor Ray Ankrah in their scheduled lightweight battle.
Felix William stopped Enoch Lamptey in round four in their scheduled featherweight contest, in the super bantamweight contest, Prince Octopus Dzanie TKO Daniel Quartey in round four.
Daniel Lartey defeated Daniel Adoku via a unanimous decision (75-78, 73-79 and 75, 78) win in their super welterweight contest.
