British fight fans were treated to two pre-Christmas crackers as Dillian Whyte laid out Dereck Chisora and Josh Warrington overwhelmed Carl Frampton on December 22.
The top 5 fights we want to see in 2019
Wilder vs Joshua will be very tough!
The two domestic dust-ups have whet the appetite heading into the New Year, which promises to be another action-packed 12 months across the boxing world.
With the likes of Anthony Joshua, Callum Smith and Canelo Alvarez on the cusp of bigger and richer fights, here Pulse Ghana Sports lists 10 bouts we want to see in 2019.
Anthony Joshua (UK) vs Deontay Wilder (USA)
As goes the old adage: Where the heavyweight division goes, the rest of boxing follows. Right now the blue-riband division is booming, but still the best need to fight the best.
Wilder's controversial draw with Tyson Fury only heightened the anticipation for this meeting of two unbeaten world champions, both looking to become the first undisputed champion this century.
The fight has everything. UK vs USA, big puncher vs massive puncher. The winner must, of course, then go on to meet the Gypsy King and continue what could prove a memorable chapter in the division's history.
Callum Smith (UK) vs Canelo Alvarez (Mex)
Liverpool's Smith announced himself as one of this country's finest fighters with a brilliant stoppage win over British rival George Groves in the final of the World Boxing Super Series.
That earned him the Ali Trophy, the WBA super-middleweight title and put him in the cross-hairs of the sport's biggest star, Canelo Alvarez.
After pummeling Rocky Fielding, middleweight king Canelo is eyeing a mega-fight at Wembley against the No 1 at 168lbs.
Vasyl Lomachenko (Ukr) vs Mikey Garcia (USA)
Ukraine's Lomachenko is a phenomenon. After an incredible amateur career, Hi-Tech has won world titles in three weight classes in only 13 professional fights.
An artist with dazzling footwork, Lomachenko unified the WBO and WBA lightweight titles in December against Jose Pedraza.
unbeaten Garcia, 39-0, is his true test at 135lbs. The American still holds the WBC and IBF titles, so their fight would be for all the belts.
Anthony Yarde (UK) vs Joshua Buatsi (UK)
At first glance, British light-heavyweight prospects Anthony Yarde and Joshua Buatsi are two fighters with little in common.
The former is with Frank Warren and building a reputation on the back of a short amateur career. The latter is Eddie Hearn's golden child who turned over after earning bronze at the Rio Olympics.
But both are unbeaten and both have made waves so far in the professional ranks. Hearn hopes they will meet for the British title in the new year.
Kell Brook (UK) vs Amir Khan (UK)
This fight may be well past its sell-by date but it's one that will still generate tremendous interest on this side of the Atlantic.
Neither holds a world title anymore and both have looked vulnerable in recent outings, with Brook labouring past Michael Zerafa in early December.
It's been many years in the making and could be signed should Khan turn down a fight with Crawford. If it never happens, neither man will ever be allowed to forget it.
