Medeama suffer 1-3 defeat against Sundowns

The Ghana FA Cup Champions threw away a 1-0 lead in the last 10 minutes to concede 3 late goals against the South African giants.

It was a shocking game with unbelievable events. To begin  with, Eric Kwakwa scored under a minute of kick off to give the Tarkwa based side a surprising lead.

Kwakwa hammered in a shot from 20 yards after Akwasi Donsu had laid a pass to him.

From there on was a game of cagey contest. Sundowns, the declared champions of South Africa had a daunting task before their home fans.

The spirited performance of Medeama, whose high field pressing restrained the Brazilians from posing real threat in attack also ensured a clean output from their defense.

With squandered chances from both sides, the first half ended in Medeama's advantage. The 1-0 scoreline at the break was a surprise but the work rate of the Mauves and Yellow proved they were worth it.

Sundowns, resumed the second half with the same tactics. Use of the flanks and sent in the crosses, they hassled Medeama of possession and built up attack in quick succession.

Nonetheless Medeama defended well and won most of the aerial tussles. Time was fast ticking away to full time. Tom Strand, coach of Medeama made substitutions for goalscorer Kwakwa, the ever impressive skimmer Kwame Boahene and his fellow wing wizard, Samuel Bio.

Pitso Mosimane also brought on fresh legs into his team and surely he had the reward he crucially needed before a defeat will disgracefully cut short their celebrations of being crowned domestic winners of the Premier Soccer League.

Columbia striker, Leonardo Castro headed in a corner kick in the 81st minute to pull parity. It was poor defending from Malik Akowuah and Muntari Tagoe could have done better as well.

Confidence soared and in the 84th minute, Curthbet Billiat sliced an attempt from wide right in deep area. Goalkeeper Muntari Tagoe saw the ball flying towards goal yet he stood flat without any backward movement for the ball to loop over his poor attempt and rolled into net.

It became a stunning goal for Billiat who turned and opened his arms to his fans.

Muntari though, had conceded a bad goal to break the spirit of his team as the captain.

Sundowns notched up their aggregate advantage with a third goal through substitute Curthbet Malajila who calmly slotted home from close range in the 87th minute.

A free kick that was floated into the box found Castro, who took out the on rushing goalie Muntari and gave the ball to Malajila to touch the ball past helpless legs into the open net.

Three goals in six minutes, in the final ten minutes, after conceding in the opening minute. That was the highlights of the game as Sundowns overcame the setback from Medeama to produce a sensation which left the faces of the Ghanaians slapped in wondrous disillusion.
