Ghana President John Dramani Mahama to commission new stadium at Cape Coast

The 16,000 capacity edifice is a $35 million project wholly financed as a grant by the People's Republic of China. Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Sun Baohong will join president Mahama to finally cut the sod to bring the stadium into main stream activities.

Construction of the stadium began in August 2013 till the final inspection of the facilities on Christmas eve last year (24 December,2015) by officials of both Ghana and China. Earlier in January 2016 after the installation of the flood lights, the Chinese construction company turned on the lights for a test run, which was later followed by the official handing over from the Chinese engineers to Ghanaian engineering firm, the Architectural Engineering Services Limited (AESL).

The multi sports facility boast of 21 fully furnished rooms that accommodates two individuals per room, two halls for table tennis and boxing respectively, with the latter loaded with equipment and gym equipment for the boxers. There are two outdoor basketball courts, one handball and one tennis court, an eight lane running tracks and a football pitch.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has also fixed two transformers at the stadium, which will be supported by the industrial power plant on standby.

Youth and Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lantei Vanderpuye has been in the Central Regional capital since Saturday, getting down to grounds work and organizational supervision for the climaxing event.

Before the momentous moment with president Mahama in the evening, all sports facilities will host its maiden matches in an activity packed day from 8am to about 10pm, where fire works will follow the match of the evening between Ghana U20 male team and China U19. The event is a free entry for the general public.
